Box newels (square) instead of (round) turned newels. Choice of stain or paint; the newel cap could be of the same wood as the rail--- oak, cherry, walnut, or mahogony, or provide a contrast.

 

A closed string instead of the open tread or open string look:
Use of goosenecks at
changes of elevation....

... and many options for newels, rails, and balusters.
